Kerala is the land of festival. With every change of season the secular and friendly people of Kerala celebrates festivals with great enthusiasm and joy. Among all the festivals in Kerala, Onam is the biggest one and is celebrate as the national festival of the state, Kerala. Onam falls in the Malayalam month of Chingam that is between August to September. Legend behind celebration of Onam is that this grand festival is celebrated as the home coming of Mahabali, the King who once ruled over Kerala in the age of plenty and later pushed down by Lord Vishnu to the infernal regions in the form of Vamana.

Kerala celebrates each and every festival but apart from all there are certain religious as well as culture festivals that are celebrated with great excitement in the state by the locals. After Onam festival, another big event that state witness is the Kerala boat race also called Snake Boat Races held every year during the month of August first week at the Punnamada at Alappuzha. Giant snake boats called “Chundanvalloms” which provide seat to 100 rowers take part in the contest to win the National Nehru Trophy. The event take place in a carnival atmosphere and invites participants as well as visitors from across the world to be the part of one of the greatest event or Kerala festivals.
