According to a legend it is said that a Portuguese ship was caught in a terrible storm and the sailors had prayed to Mother Mary to save them. They are said to have put a statue of the Virgin Mary in a box and set it to sail on the Arabian Sea with a determination to build a church where the box would land. The people who found the box then established a church with the statute. Some years later the Portuguese arrived with a grand altar and installed the savior statue on it. The statue is still in the Church and it is said that prayers to her are answered. Beaches - the most well known beaches in this city are the Mahatma Gandhi beach and the Thirumullavaram beach. The waters here are really calm and it makes the place an ideal place to swim. Also the beaches are long and quiet thus walks here are really peaceful and enjoyable.
